Are you yoking yourself with unbelievers? (You may be and not realise it.)

“Be ye not *unequally yoked* together with unbelievers*: for what fellowship* hath righteousness with unrighteousness*? and what communion* hath light with darkness?” 2 Corinthians 6:14yoked
In my Bible this is the first verse under the heading “Paul’s Appeal for Separation from Unbelievers”.
There are several key words that I can see that really stick out to me.I will go into detail in order as they appear in the verse.
1 – unequally yoked – Strong’s #2086 – to yoke up differently, to associate discordantly, unequally yoke together with.
Think of it like this, you get two professional sports players, one who plays golf and the other who plays chess. Do you think they will both be able to play the other person’s sport equally? No, they won’t because they are specialised in their own sport. If you try to pair them up to play together it just won’t work.
Or if you try to pair up an accountant with a gym instructor, or a mechanic and a marine biologist. They just won’t work.
The same goes for (spiritually) born again Christians and unbelievers, which I will go into next.
2 – unbelievers – Strong’s #571 – disbelieving, ie without Christian faith, a heathen, untrustworthy person, they that believe not, faithless, infidel..
From the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary – An incredulous person; one who does not believe.  An infidel; one who discredits revelation, or the mission, character and doctrines of Christ.
This is an important one because many who profess to be Christians really aren’t.
There are different forms of ‘unbelievers’, be they a professing Christian who denies the true Jesus Christ by false teaching/false doctrine/false gospel, or someone who doesn’t believe in Jesus at all. The ones who profess Christ yet deny him through false doctrine and a false gospel are the ones to be on the lookout for.
“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.” Romans 16:17,18
3 – fellowship – Strong’s # 3352 – participation. If we are a born again Christian we should not be partaking in the same things as unbelievers do. Think of it in the sporting context. When a team is playing a sport, say football, they are all playing for a common goal and with the same rules. Christians do not have the same goals nor the same (for want of a better term) rules as those who are not saved.
Yes, Jesus associated with sinners but He did not participate in their sins in order to be like them to be approachable or for those people to be able to relate to Him.

4 – unrighteousness – Strong’s #458 – violation of law, wickedness, illegality. It’s like a (non corrupt) police officer being best friends with a hard core criminal.

     5 – communion – Strong’s #2842 – partnership, participation, social intercourse.
Another word is fellowship. This ties in with #3.
From my understanding this can be applied to both those who are unsaved, and also the false teachers that are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
In the context of those who aren’t in the faith I think it’s pretty clear. But when we look at it in the context of false teachers it may not be quite so clear.
I think of it this way: I live in a town where there are only two denominations of churches, both of which are false, ie false Jesus which equals a false gospel, which equals false doctrines, therefore false teachings. I’ve been told I should just attend either one of them anyway because at least it’s fellowship and teaching. If I were to attend either of these denominations it would suggest that I agree with and accept their (false) teachings, which would mean that I would be unequally yoked with them. And as you can hopefully see, that is opposite of what the Bible teaches.
I don’t think people take these scriptures seriously enough.
Why do this when we are specifically told to stay away from friendship with people that are not in the faith and false teachers and false teachings?!
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. James 4:4
“If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.” 2 John 1:10,11
If we follow false teachers there are serious consequences, ie partaking, or participating in their evil deeds. And just one more quick note. Don’t you find it interesting that the book of Jude, a book about false teachers, false teachings and apostasy is the book immediately before the book Revelation?! Just think about that for a moment and let it sink in.
