I’ve heard many excuses recently as to why people lie. They have justified it by saying things like ‘I’m doing it for the right reason’, or ‘I’m trying to encourage my children’s imagination’.
I have even heard people say something like it’s ok to lie if it’s for a noble cause, because God knows their heart on the matter.
Here’s what the Bible says about the heart. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9
Really, you think it’s ok to lie to someone because you think God will wink at you because it’s for a good reason?
Where does it say that in scripture??I wonder if it says it in any of these verses? Doesn’t look like it.
“Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.” Leviticus 19:11 “He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.” Psalms 101:7
“A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [he that] speaketh lies shall perish.” Proverbs 19:9
“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;” Colossians 3:9
Those were just a few. I’ll add more to show what God really thinks of lying, and that it’s not ok to lie for a good cause.
“These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue,” Proverbs 6:16,17
“Lying lips [are] abomination to the LORD”. Proverbs 12:22
Now, for what happens to those who lie. And if this doesn’t convict anyone from lying, for whatever reason, then I’d really question if they are truly born again.
(Of course only God truly knows, but we can tell by a person’s fruit. If they continually, wilfully lie, even after being shown verses like the above, then they are either lip service Christians, who want Jesus only as their Saviour and not their Lord or they could very well need deliverance from a lying spirit.)
“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable**, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all LIARS, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8
**Refer to the verses above, Proverbs 6:16,17 and Proverbs 12:22
These are some of the verses that convicted me of lying several years ago. I stopped lying to my children about Santa (an anagram of Satan), the Easter Bunny and all sorts of other things which could be seen as a ‘good cause’ or ‘for the right reasons’.
I highly doubt God will accept any of these excuses when you try to tell Him why you did it.
